Spotlight on Serbia Film Commission
From the urban charm of Belgrade to the impressive nature and enchanting countryside, Serbia offers a rich tapestry of backdrops to entice any filmmaker. The Serbia Film Commission (SFC) promotes and develop Serbia as a cost-effective, high-quality, competitive destination for international filmmaking, working as policy advocate and training provider.
Serbia recently hosted four episodes of the third season of the Seal Team, two seasons of Miss Scarlet and the Duke and feature films Minamata, with Johnny Depp, and The Machine. The American/Serbian coproduction Hell Hole recently wrapped in Rtanj Mountain.
In 2021, the highly anticipated Knives Out 2, featuring big stars like Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, and Edward Norton, was partially filmed in Belgrade. Major brands such as KIA Motors, Burger King, and Mercedes and LMGI Best TVC Location Nominee Penny: Organic Food for All, have also found locations and studios in Belgrade, a perfect place to describe the values of their brand.
Serbian audience loved domestic soap opera Secrets of the Vine. One of the main filming locations – Rajac wine cellars – not only became a popular touristic site, but also attracted many more film crews, such as the production of the drama series The Time of Death. The Rajac wine cellars region is today one of the most prominent Serbian location for filming.
However, the main star location for film crews is definitely Stara Planina (The Old Mountain), whose cruel but fascinating nature was the perfect scenery for 2022 Australian Oscar Nominee You Won’t Be Alone and for Bollywood blockbuster Uri: The Surgical Strike.
Brutalist architecture of Novi Beograd (New Belgrade) is highly appreciated by directors and production designers of many commercials and music videos. However, advertisers’ favorite place among all mountains, is the authentic beauty of Tara Mountain which will shine again soon in the Serbian feature thriller film Isolation. Other locations highly recommended from production teams are the Royal Palace and the Port of Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Pančevo.
But it’s not just the aesthetic appeal that makes Serbia stand out. The friendly and skilled local crew make for a seamless production process from start to finish. Moreover, Serbia’s rental companies are equipped with the latest technology to assist filmmakers from production to post-production, all in one convenient location.
Belgrade, one of the most vibrant and exciting European capitals, is the main urban location for films shot in Serbia and it is also home of film studios. Dean Devlin and Balkanic Media productions The Outpost (seasons 2,3 and 4) and The Ark, currently on SYFY channel, were shot in PFI Studios.
The Serbia Film Commission, which actively participates in activities of the Serbia Creates platform established by the Prime Minister’s office, is dedicated to expanding the creative business network, improving skills and services and fostering a film-friendly environment in the country.
Since 2017 SFC partners with Crater VFX Training Center and VFXSerbia in the organization of CGA Belgrade, a conference dedicated to arts and industries of computer graphics. A broad industry initiative that supports education, artistic development and business growth of animation, visual effects, gaming and digital arts.
Among the many SFC’s exciting projects in the pipeline, Filmstatic East Serbia will discover and highlight new and unheard-of locations of Eastern Serbia worth shooting. This exciting initiative will inspire the involvement of local communities as local scouts will be trained to seek out and document unique film locations in the area. After thriller The Ledge, Southern East Serbia is waiting to be discovered by new film crews.
The European Film Commissions Network is a non-profit association that supports and promotes the European film industry and culture. It currently represents 98 European film commissions and film institutions from 30 different countries.
